Welcome back to Craft Room Overhaul Week Two! This week Kim and I will be tackling notions!!!!
For the next three weeks we’re going to focus on a specific elements of your craft room to overhaul. We’re starting with NOTIONS! (Week 3 is Books & Patterns, Week 4 is Fabric)
My grandmother was an amazing seamstress and made clothes for herself quite often. She had a Singer in a cabinet that I only saw out a couple of times. She was also the least messy sewer I have ever known! Pretty sure she would be displeased with the state of my sewing room and would have given me a very stern "KIMBERLEY ANNE!" and a look that could freeze Hawaii!
Being Southern, that was the way I knew 100% that I was in trouble, the use of my first and middle name in one breath!Anyway, Mema, would on rare occasions, would take me to the fabric store with her. The fabric store was a place of magical wonderment for me! The big books with all of possibilities of outfits and the best part of all...the notions section!!!!!! So many treasures! It is amazing that I did not teach myself how to sew sooner just so I could use some of those incredible notions!!!!!
What are notions? If you are new to the sewing and quilting community
you may not know what notions are, I found this helpful description on Wikipedia:
"In sewing and haberdashery, notions are small objects or accessories, including items that are sewn or otherwise attached to a finished article, such as buttons, snaps, and collar stays. Notions also include the small tools used in sewing, such as needles, thread, pins, marking pens, elastic, and seam rippers. The noun is almost always used in the plural.[1] The term is chiefly in American English (the equivalent British term is haberdashery). It was also formerly used in the phrase "Yankee notions", meaning American products. A fabric store will have a section or department devoted to notions, and a spool of thread is considered a notion"
So, basically, almost everything in your sewing room that is NOT fabric! And of course you need ALL THE THINGS, so how do you organize them in a way that they are:
1: Safe (pins, needles, scissors, rotary cutters)
2. Easy to find
3. Stored for longevity (thread for example)
4. Easy on the budget!
Trying to make room for everything in a thoughtful way can be overwhelming! When I am sewing, I want everything to be an easy reach! I am very impatient when looking for things. In this cabinet, I have stored my Must Have Now items.
All of the baskets and bins can be easily pulled out for easy searching.
Look at all of the items that are in the 3 center bins! AMAZING!
When looking for storage, think outside of the box (see what I did there, lol)! Fry baskets and office supply items can be found for a song just about anywhere!
Sewing machine needles and hand sewing needles can be dangerous, ask my son! I found this sewing box in a thrift shop for a few dollars and it is the perfect storage for my needles!
Baskets are also a big (or little) item in my storage. This tiny basket was picked up at a garage sale and it is perfect! When working on a project, I grab items I might need for that specific project and put them in this basket to keep next to me while sewing.
How many rulers does a quilter need? My guess would be 1,909,563!!!!!! After trying many ways to keep all of my rulers together, I have settled on this wire bin from Target. It was on clearance and I purchased a number of them to use in different areas of my room.
Scissors, Rotary Cutters, and tools! You can add some extra color to your studio with clearance pots from your big box home improvement store! At $1 a piece, you cannot go wrong and it keeps all of the blades safely in the away from hand position!
Thread!!!! For the colors I use the most, I have this thread stand up on my wall. It does not hurt that it is pretty too!
For colors that I am not using I use IKEA storage boxes with lids to keep thread out of direct light and dust free!

The above mentioned are just a few ways that you can add usable and interesting storage to your studio that will help keep notions in their place and still easy for you to find! I think Mema would have approved!

I enjoyed your post. Many of my bins look just like yours did. I probably will not get too organized any time within the near future. I actually have that exact same little green sewing box. My mother recently passed away and I found it down there. It was purchased for me for my High School Home Ec. Sewing and quilting is so much fun, but it is very messy, also.
ReplyDeleteThe bulb went on with your "must have now" bins on that shelf set!! I always want everything out where I can see it so I "won't forget" which leads to heaps and piles and lint and dust bunnies, blah blah blah.
ReplyDeleteI am starting the bins now so I don't have 47 places to look for something, but maybe just 8 ... or 11 ... or hell, maybe even just 3!!
Great post!
I have been working toward getting all things alike together in one place, except for the ones that live on the ironing table or the cutting table or next to the sewing machine. All elastic in one covered bin, all scissors in one drawer, all ribbon in one plastic tote, etc. Then, as I come across an item somewhere in the depths, I can move it to the location of it's sisters. This is a slow process and since I have been working on this for a couple years, I have most items in their designated places now.
