New York Beauties are the perfect way to share a rainbow of colors!
Last Monday I shared my flat lay for the full collection and how bright the colors are in these batiks.
Deciding on making the New York Beauty was really a no brainer. The light grey background fabrics allow the saturated colors to pop without having too much contrast.
The New York Beauty is a free pattern. The block I made is 6. I have yet to decide on what this will end up to be but I can ALWAYS use a new sofa cushion cover!
These colors are to LIVE FOR!!! It needs a bath and to be blocked still but I am really very happy with the results.
When making a curved piecing block, I found a trick to cutting more accurate arcs!

ReplyDeleteBest sewing tip I learned was to read the directions all the way through before starting a project. That way, if there are any terms of techniques you don't know you won't be surprised.

ReplyDeleteBest tip: Don't be afraid to try something new, but when starting a project that you haven't tried before, make sure you understand how to do it before you jump right in so you won't mess it up. (Ask me how I know!)
It is gorgeous -- and the pointy shapes look a bit like TIES! You planned that perfectly! The best tip I have gotten is to sew what you love. It's easy to get discouraged on a project you don't like.

ReplyDeleteBest tip was from the old HGTV Simply Quilts program: If you are going along and notice a mistaken stitch...Don't go back and fix it right away, when you are all done, if it still bugs you, fix it then...
ReplyDeleteI think the best recent sewing tip would hafta be your tip of folding the pattern piece for the NY Beauty. As a former engineer, It just makes perfect sense to me for better accuracy in a symmetrical pattern like the NY Beauty. Thanks so much for the link to the patterns! whooo-hooooo! 💕
ReplyDeleteMy best sewing tip is when I learned where my scant quarter inch is on my machine. My piecing has greatly improved!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt. Best tip I learned is that accurate seam allowances matter. My garment sewing improved when my mother put a piece of masking tape on the machine at 5/8". My quilt piecing improved after I figured out what settings gave me a scant 1/4".
ReplyDeleteBe in the right frame of mind to cut your fabric. If you are tired, "hangry", not feeling well, mind in another place or in a rush; put that blade down! Invariably, that will be the time you will do an incorrect cut. (Fabric or worse, body part!)

ReplyDeleteThe best sewing tip I’ve learned is patience. I’m still learning it! But to really slow down and not rush the process will allow for less mistakes and better results.
ReplyDeleteOne of my best tips is to make what you love and be bold. I have sewn and designed clothing for many years before I started quilting. My creative quilting mind wants to expand and I am working on that now. These batiks are so pretty in palette and pattern. Scott is such a quirky happy person and I was glad to meet him in person.

ReplyDeleteBest sewing tip I ever got was to take things nice and slow. Rushing only leads to mistakes and you will need more time to undo these mistakes (so frustrating! ) instead of working at a nice steady pace.. -and don't forget to breathe! (And smile ��)

ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous use of the fabric you chose Kim! I learned how to sew a diagonal line of stitching into the corners of my binding to make the corners crisp and perfectly mitred. A game changer for me!

ReplyDeleteI love how these colors look in the New York Beauty block! As a relative newbie still, all the tips are great! Although slowing down is probably one that I have to remind myself of most often; it sucks to sew a long line and then realize your bobbin was empty at least 12 inches ago!

My best tip is from Lori Kennedy: when tying off threads that are too short, use a surgeon's knot. Wrap the longer thread around tweezers, then pick up the short one with the tweezers and pull through. A related tip is to use easy-threading needles to bury the threads.
ReplyDeleteI had a terrible time sewing a straight line when I first started sewing. Someone told me to quit looking at the needle, and instead focus ahead of the needle. It worked well with some practice on not looking at the needle. Jadahlgr at Yahoo dot Com

ReplyDeleteYour New York Beauty is stunning! My tip is, always use a 'leader' when you start sewing. When piecing, start with a small piece of fabric before you feed in your quilting fabric to avoid bunching up of threads. Smooth sailing every time!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I can think of the best sewing tip - I have heard so many over the years. One of the things I have learned is that I should look for different ways to do something, and choose the one that works best for me. There are many philosophies cut and piece accurately vs. make it big and trim it to size, etc., and sometimes one method works better for me than another. Also sometimes there are blocks that look difficult that are really easy to piece, but you have to know the shortcut!

ReplyDeleteI love the fabrics in your New York Beauty Block! As for a tip, I like to use starch when making small blocks. I also learned to use an Add-A-Quarter ruler with paper piecing. Thanks for the link to the blocks.

ReplyDeleteThe best tip I’ve learned recently was the method of making a pattern piece for a bit of curved piecing out of freezer paper. You can iron it onto your fabric for cutting, and leave it on while you sew for accuracy and to prevent stretching of your fabric. This was done while making a Jacqueline DeJonge pattern.

ReplyDeleteI would have to say that the best sewing advice I ever received was from my 5th grade teacher Ms Scott. She was the first person to introduce sewing into my life and she always said,"Take your time. It'll get done. Don't worry about what anyone else is doing or if their work looks better than yours because what works for one person may not work for the next and what one person sees as imperfection will be seen by another as beauty. I appreciate and thank Ms Scott for letting us know back then that there are occasions where it's okay to move at your own pace. ��

ReplyDeleteAwesome NY beauty pattern. One recent tip I learned in a class was to use a piece of fine sandpaper as a way to anchor squares to draw diagonals for making 1/2 square triangles. It holds the fabric in place perfectly, with no wiggling around.
