Old School Block of the Month July!!!!

 

Oh WOW! Can you believe it is already July!?! That means it is my turn for the Old School Block of the Month Block! This fantastic BOM was organized by my dear friend Kim from Persimon Dreams! She is a wonderful person always doing things for the sewing and quilting community!

I am calling this block  Summer Loving because I had me a blast and I hope you will too!

I made 3 versions of this block, one in solids and two with fussy cuts! You can make whatever version your heart desires! This is a super fast block and once you have made one, more are sure to follow! 

 

How about we get started! Before cutting fabric please read through all instructions first!

For this block you will need:

Two 7 1/8" Square Background Fabric A

5 1/2" Square Fabric B1 

5 1/2" Square Fabric B2

3 1/2" Square Fabric C1

3 1/2" Square Fabric C2

Four - 3 1/2" Squares Fabric D 

(Fussy cutting is optional! If you are fussycutting, be mindful of direction of print you are using! Look through this tutorial to see why the direction matters)

This block is 12.5" finished. All seam allowances are 1/4"

 

Take the subcut B1and B2 fabrics and match up to create 4 half square triangles.

Sew them using a 1/4" seam allowance.

The C1 and C2 angles will be matched up and you will sew the short side of the angle.

After stitching up all of the angles, press the seams open

Place the half square triangles to one side. Line up the C1 and C2 angles

Using a 1/4" seam, stitch down the long side of angle.

Press the center block open

Trim down to 3 1/2" square.

 

Grab the half square triangles and trim to 3 1/2" squares.

 

Line up your rows. Notice how the fussy look off?

This block is on point, so when it is turned, those fussy cuts are perfectly placed!

Sew the squares together using a 1/4" seam

Press open and check to make sure that there is 1/4"space from the bottom of the block to where the angle will be meeting the center block.

Sew the other squares on the opposite side

Take the top row and fold it over the center block. Line up the seams and stitch together.

 

Repeat the process and then press all seams open. Trim this center 9 patch to to 9" square

You are almost done! Time for the background fabric to complete this block!

Place 2 angles of background fabric on opposite sides of the center block. Sew using a 1/4" seam.

Repeat on the other two sides!

Trim and you are DONE!
